The International Olympic Committee (IOC) made an exciting announcement on Wednesday, July 24th, 2024 that Salt Lake City, Utah will once again host the Winter Olympics.

Salt Lake City played host for the first time in 2002. A little over three decades later, the city will once again welcome the world's best winter sports athletes in 2034.

POWDER's Ella Boy covered the news earlier today that Snowbasin Resort, as part of the Salt Lake City bid, has been selected to host the alpine skiing events, just as they did in 2002.

We've since learned via press release that Park City Mountain Resort (PCMR) has been selected to host the men's and women's skiing and snowboarding freestyle events at the 2034 games.

PCMR hosted freestyle events at the 2002 Winter Olympics as well. Deirdra Walsh, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of PCMR commented on the announcement:

"The entire Park City Mountain team is incredibly proud to be a venue for the Olympic Winter Games Salt Lake City-Utah 2034! Park City has a long history of hosting world-class winter sports events — including the 2002 Winter Games, 20 years of America’s Opening World Cup races, 35 years of Huntsman Cup adaptive games, the U.S. Grand Prix and FIS World Championships. The Olympics bring the world together to celebrate the values of excellence, friendship and respect on a global scale. We look forward to creating a uniquely meaningful “Home Games” experience for hundreds of U.S. athletes in 2034 and welcoming athletes and fans from across the world.”

Following the success of the 2002 games, Park City Mountain Resort has remained on the forefront of the park and freestyle skiing scenes. The 3 Kings Park and Eagle Superpipe are renowned for attracting the biggest names in skiing and snowboarding on a regular basis.

For the 2034 Olympics, PCMR will host the following events: men’s and women’s snowboarding halfpipe, snowboarding slopestyle, freestyle skiing halfpipe and freestyle skiing slopestyle.

Ten years certainly isn't a short period of time, but we're excited to see the Winter Olympics return to Salt Lake City, PCMR, and Snowbasin.
