Reparations commission to ask for six-month extension
In its final meeting July 15, the Community Reparations Commission agreed to request a six-month extension from the Asheville City Council on Tuesday, July 23. City staff, however, plans to recommend the commission get only another three months to complete its task of finalizing recommendations for how the city and Buncombe County can repair harm caused by generations of systemic racism and produce a final report.

ASHEVILLE - Several public-facing county departments are on the move. Likely by March of next year, residents visiting the tax department, election services or the permitting office will find them co-located at 35 Woodfin St., along with others, a consolidation that staff says will help "centralize" essential Buncombe County services.
New way of electing school board candidates in Buncombe
A new way of electing Buncombe County School Board members will go into effect for the fall election. Voters will now vote for two school board seats on their ballot instead of seven. One seat will be for the voters specific geographic area (districts 1-6) and the other seat will be for at-large candidate representing the entire county (excluding the Asheville City School district area.)
Asheville nonprofit receives annual clean air award for solar projects
A nonprofit that helps community organizations go solar received the Clean Air Excellence Award from the Asheville-Buncombe Air Quality Agency. Green Built Alliance was recognized for its Appalachian Offsets Program, which has installed solar technology at not-for-profit organizations in Buncombe County. The solar installations reduced local emissions and improved air quality.
