An Illinois project has $302 million to rebuild bridge -- How many of them actually need state's attention?

    2023-04-08

A report published online by the American Road & Transportation Builders Association reveals that there are 26,873 bridges in Illinois. Out of them, 2,423 are structurally deficient (source), and this is causing so many problems for locals in one way or the other.

Some other facts shared in the same report indicates that 167 structurally deficient bridges can be found on the Interstate Highway System and nearly 83 percent of them are not even on this highway system (source). It clearly means there are hundreds of bridges across Illinois that need the government's attention.

$302 million to rebuild a bridge in Illinois

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker seems to have started paying attention to this thing. They have collaborated with the Illinois Department of Transportation in the presence of community leaders and local policymakers to announce funds for the construction of the Perryville Road bridge (source).

As part of this new project, $302 million are made available. If this is just the beginning, it can be expected that the state will spend millions more on the repair or reconstruction of those bridges that have been called structurally deficient.

The Perryville Road bridge receives thousands of vehicles every day across I-39 and U.S. 20/51 and connects Machesney Park with that of Loves Park and Rockford. Its rebuilding is expected to be completed by 2027. And over 10 bridges will be worked on during this project, such as the Kishwaukee River bridges.

Do you believe this project will help people get some sort of relief since those deficient bridges may also be repaired or reconstructed?
