In Chicago, domestic workers have to do a lot of hard work. From cleaning the house to taking care of the elders, kids, and pets, they perform multiple tasks but some privately hired domestic workers are not paid what they actually deserve.

The minimum wage is set at $15 per hour for each domestic worker regardless of their immigration status, gender, and race. Still, they face a significant number of problems that are not necessarily related to money. Sometimes, they are not treated with respect and remain unpaid when extra hours have to be spent at the workplace.

In order to help these people out, Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot's idea of providing financial help is simply incredible.

$1.2 million distributed as part of the Chicago Resiliency Fund

Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Department of Family and Support Services (DFSS) Commissioner Brandie Knazze have made it clear that $1.2 million has been distributed so far and nearly 2,400 households have benefited from the one-time payment of $500 (source).

Can you get the relief payment?

The answer is yes if you fulfill the following conditions.

1. You are a domestic worker or an undocumented resident.
2. You live in Chicago, Illinois.
3. Your age is 18 years or more.
4. Your total household income is 300 percent lesser than the Federal Poverty Level, which is $74,580 for a family of three.
