Some Chicago residents may qualify for funds via new program

According to a report published by the Illinois Department on Aging, since 2000, the state’s older population has grown from 1.9 million to over 2.7 million (source). An individual is considered old when their age is at least 60 years or above.

Old-age people represent a big part of the state and it is believed that by 2030, their population will increase by 3.5 million or more and it will represent more than 24 percent of the total population of the state (source).

It is worth mentioning that a significant number of elderly do full-time or part-time jobs, and this is obviously because of the lack of money. They face so many problems, some of which have been discussed below.

1. Firstly, there is a lack of proper pension plans or retirement savings for people over 60, and that’s the reason why they continue doing different types of jobs.
2. Many of them think that physical activities are the secret to a longer and healthier life, but they cannot do heavy sorts of work.
3. A big issue is bias in the workplace. They are less motivated and often ignored, which leads them to lose self-confidence to an extent.

Can $5 million make any difference in the lives of our seniors?

$5 million is actually a big amount but it is not solely for Illinois but for older workforce across Illinois, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Tennessee. Of course, this amount offered by AmeriCorps can help seniors resolve their money-related issues.

Basically, $5 million will be awarded to five different AmeriCorps Seniors grantee organizations and the aim is to build new pathways for older adults and to provide them with more and better work opportunities.
