SAN ANGELO, Texas ( Concho Valley Homepage ) — A San Angelo man died overnight on June 23 after being stabbed at a home that was falsely believed to be broken into, according to the Tom Green County Sheriff’s Office.

TGSO is currently investigating the death of 23-year-old Layne Lubke, who died during a stabbing incident that occurred in the 1200 block of Vines Road in Tom Green County.

The sheriff’s office stated that deputies responded to a residence in the area at approximately 11:53 p.m. in reference to a stabbing victim. Upon arriving at the scene, deputies located Lubke in the backyard of the property.

Lubke had suffered a stab wound to the upper-left chest area as well as the left-side abdominal area. A second individual, identified as 24-year-old Shae Shepherd, was found attempting to apply direct pressure to Lubke’s wounds.

Lubke was transported to Shannon Medical Center via ambulance. He would later be pronounced deceased.

A preliminary investigation into the incident has indicated that Lubke and Shepherd spent the afternoon of Sunday, June 23, drinking at bars in San Angelo. Shepherd’s girlfriend called the pair back to the property, claiming that she heard gunshots in the area and afterward heard the sound of someone breaking into her residence.

Arriving at the residence, Shepherd armed himself with a pocket knife and traveled to the rear of the property, where he would encounter Lubke coming from the other direction. Confused in the moment and under the apparent influence of alcohol, Shepherd stabbed Lubke, resulting in his death.

Investigators found no evidence of an intruder at the residence.

Shepherd was arrested on one charge of manslaughter and booked into the Tom Green County Detention Center at 6:55 a.m. on Monday, June 24. He has no posted bond as of the time of publication.

TGSO’s investigation into the incident is ongoing. Anyone with information pertaining to the investigation is asked to contact its Criminal Investigation Division at (325)-655-8111.
