BOSQUEVILLE, Texas ( FOX 44 ) – Bosqueville High School created its first Bass Fishing Club in its the history in 2022. They have garnered accolades and championships here in Central Texas.

This upcoming school year, they will be introducing their first all-girls Bass Fishing Team, making history once again.

The Bass Fishing Team consists of six boy teams and one girl team. They are set to compete in a Central Texas tournament trail.

“You know, it’s not very many girl teams in the sport at all. So, us having women is gonna be a really big deal,” said Hunter Edwards, Bass Fishing Club President.

Mallory Turnmire and Abby Bolt, two incoming sixth graders, will compete in a Central Texas tournament trail allowing students in grades 6-12 to compete at the highest level.

Turnmire hopes this new team will prove that fishing is not a sport just for boys, but that girls can do just as good, if not better. They are proud to be making history for their school.

“I hope it encourages them to do stuff they think they can’t,” said Bolt.

The two girls have been fishing their entire lives, and say it requires a lot of patience and skill. The largest fish Abby caught was a Hybrid Stripped Bass, which ranges between 15 – 20 inches in length.

Both Mallory and Abby have hopes of taking their fishing passion to the collegiate level in the future.

Despite what many may think, bass fishing is a laborious sport.

“Fishing is not all luck like most people think it is. It takes a lot of skill and a lot of time on the water trying to figure out how to fish. There are different patterns in and different parts of the year. and different tools for different parts of the year and it changes from week to week. So being out there on the water is crucial to the sport,” said Edwards.

The Bass Fishing Club does multiple fundraisers throughout the year to help cover the costs of food, transportation, fishing supplies, and housing for their tournaments.

In order to get the new girls’ team going this upcoming school year, their current fundraiser is very critical.

The club will be participating in 15 tournaments this school year.

From June 26 – July 4 at 10 p.m., the club will be selling fireworks to support their upcoming season. They are also seeking sponsorships.

You can find them at the American Fireworks Stand at 337 S McLennan Loop, Elm Mott, TX, off Exit 343.
