    National Cowboy Day July 27

Fort Concho will celebrate National Cowboy Day on Saturday, July 27, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in its historic Quartermaster Building at E. Ave. C and Burgess Street. The free event will feature refreshments and several programs, including entertainment from the Concho Cowboy Company and a talk on the American Plains Artists Western Art Show.

This year’s show features around 75 paintings and numerous sculptures by artists from across the nation. All art is for sale, with a percentage of each sale benefiting the artists, the American Plains Artists Association and Fort Concho. Any purchased work will remain on display until the show closes on Sunday, Aug. 4.

Regular hours will be from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The show is free to all.

Guests can vote for their favorite work and those receiving the most votes are invited back for a special summer show at the fort in 2025.

Founded in 1982, the American Plains Artists Association is dedicated to “highlighting the diversity of the American Plains through art.”

National Buffalo Soldier Day July 28

Fort Concho will celebrate National Buffalo Soldier Day on Sunday, July 28, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. This day also marks the one-year anniversary of the Buffalo Soldier Memorial placement to the City’s historical attractions.

The free program will begin at 2 p.m. at the memorial, located across the street from Fort Concho, with a presentation by Sherley Spears, past president of the local NAACP chapter and founder of the memorial project. At 2:30 p.m. the program will shift to the fort’s Commissary building, 301 E Avenue C, where C. A Maedgen of the West Texas Archaeology Society will speak on the Concho Mail Station.

Buffalo Soldier units from Fort Concho guarded this station more than 140 years ago. The fort’s Buffalo Soldier exhibit at Barracks 1 will be open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on July 28.
