Marshall junior Brady Stensven’s return to the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) state meet was even better than his first.

The triple jumper made the field in 2023, placing 13th in the event with a distance of 39’9.50”. His return seemed inevitable in 2024. He kicked off this year’s state tournament by winning his regional with a leap of 41’7.75”. He upped that effort to 42’10” in sectionals, earning him yet another first place finish.

He made the trip to UW-La Crosse’s Veterans Memorial Stadium for the 2024 WIAA state meet, hosted on Friday, May 31 and Saturday, June 1. His performance only continued to improve. Stensven’s leap of 43’6” earned him third place in all of Division 3. Edgar senior Teegan Streit won the event with a leap of 44’11.5”, followed by Weyauwega-Fremont sophomore Broc Billington in second at 43’10.75”.

Stensven wasn’t alone at state, either. Senior teammate Jaxon Hornby also made the trip as a participant in the 1,600 meter run. Hornby also was a veteran at WIAA state, but in a different sport.

He qualified for state twice in cross country, but had fallen just short of making it in track in consecutive season.

2024 was obviously different, dating back to the Capitol Conference meet where Hornby won a conference title in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 4:43.29. This success translated into the postseason as he finished runner-up in the event at regionals with a time of 4:49.37 and third at sectionals at 4:38.09 to punch his ticket to the big show.

At state, Hornby put up a time of 4:37.03 to place 15th.
