Spurs Reportedly Uninterested In Pairing Victor Wembanyama With Three-Time NBA All-Star

The San Antonio Spurs clearly have a gem in their hands and arguably a generational talent in Victor Wembanyama. Now that San Antonio has its cornerstone, they've been linked to multiple point guards who can help Wembanyama thrive. Atlanta Hawks guard Trae Young has been involved in those conversations.

Despite the rumored interest from San Antonio, ESPN's Zach Lowe has reported that's no longer the case since the Spurs value their picks that the Hawks would need in any trade offer.

"They don't have much incentive to tank so long as the Spurs control their first-round picks through 2027 thanks to the original Murray trade. The smoothest way to reclaiming those picks is trading Young to the Spurs, but San Antonio has not shown much recent interest in that, sources said," said Lowe via ESPN.

The Spurs have a young team built around Wembanyama, as well as Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan. San Antonio may not be officially out of the Young sweepstakes, but they aren't willing to trade what they believe is their best asset in draft picks.

"The Spurs understand the potential value of those picks, and they (for now) appear to favor holding them hostage over swapping them back to Atlanta," continued Lowe.

San Antonio recently acquired 39-year-old guard Chris Paul. If there's no trade partner for another guard, they could have Paul run the floor with Wembanyama and hold off until they make a move for another playmaker.

The addition of Young could open the floor for the Spurs and increase their offensive efficiency, but as Lowe explained, San Antonio is uninterested at the current price.
