RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — In a concerted effort to provide urgent relief to Texas, the Red Cross of Virginia has swiftly mobilized a significant shipment of essential food supplies. The humanitarian mission was initiated in response to critical needs arising in Texas where Tropical Storm Beryl is expected to hit Sunday night.

The storm has downgraded to a Category 2 since it started its path, previously wreaking havoc through the Caribbean, Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula, before hitting the Gulf of Mexico on Friday.

Early this morning, a Red Cross van with vital food provisions departed from central Virginia to San Antonio, Texas , just one of many contributing to nationwide hurricane relief efforts.

Michael Price, one of two volunteers traveling in the van to Texas, said the trip will take almost 23 hours. They’re expected to arrive in the Lone Star State Saturday evening.

“Usually a storm like this, people think they can ride it out and not have any consequences, and the next day their lives are turned upside down,” Price said. “So, the Red Cross is there to help them through this time and back on the right path again.”

The convoy is set to traverse 1,500 miles to ensure a timely delivery of food supplies to those impacted in Texas. This proactive response aims to alleviate hardships faced by individuals and families affected by recent challenges.

When they get to Texas, they will spend several hours walking around and passing out meals to people in different areas, and will stay there for two to three weeks.

The shipment consists predominantly of non-perishable food items, carefully selected to meet nutritional needs and dietary preferences, such as meat and vegetables. Such provisions are essential in disaster relief efforts, offering sustenance and comfort to individuals enduring difficult circumstances.

Price has been volunteering with the Red Cross for a year, and this trip will be his first deployment.

“Yeah, I’m a little nervous about the length of the drive and then a little about what I’ll be doing there,” Price said. “But, I’m excited about the opportunity and the opportunity to help people.”
