Did the San Antonio Spurs skimp on shooting this offseason?

If the San Antonio Spurs skimped on anything this offseason to date, it is shooting. And Bleacher Report NBA analyst Grant Hughes is one of many students of the league who noticed the lack of long-distance scoring experts on the Spurs roster, despite the fact that the team is trying to get better.

Sure, veterans Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes can hit a shot from beyond the arc with enough frequency and efficiency to help. But if the Spurs want to maximize the effectiveness of star San Antonio forward Victor Wembanyama, adding a knockdown shooter or two would have been ideal. “All in all, the Spurs added mature vets who’ll make the team better and augment an already rock-solid culture,” writes Hughes.

“San Antonio’s quest to create a stable and professional environment (while adding future assets) around … Wembanyama , while wise and insightful in a big-picture sense, has so far neglected a more basic need.”

“The Spurs can’t shoot,” writes the B/R analyst. “Last year, San Antonio ranked 29th in 3-point accuracy. Paul could help create better looks for teammates, but neither he nor Barnes brings high volume or elite accuracy from deep.”

“Wembanyama could be so dominant that a lack of stretch on the roster doesn’t even affect him. But surely it’d be easier for him to thrive in space if there were more space to explore.”
