SAN BENITO, MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- CAL FIRE BEU announced Thursday that they will be suspending burning permits and other uses of open fire until further notice.

"I hereby suspend, except within the incorporated cities, the privileges of burning by permit and other uses of open fire in the geographic area described as all state responsibility area lands within the counties of San Benito and Monterey," said George Nunez Jr., Unit Chief of CAL FIRE BEU .

Chief Nunez gave fire related destruction to life and property, as well as fire weather and dry vegetation as reasons for this suspension.

"Campfires within organized campgrounds or on private property that are otherwise permitted will be allowed if the campfire is maintained in such a manner as to prevent its spread to the wildland," stated Nunez.

CAL FIRE said they can issue restricted temporary burning permits when it is essential for public health, safety or welfare purposes.
