Vista Fire in San Bernardino National Forest 83% contained, Mt. Baldy Resort reopens

The Mt. Baldy Resort has reopened as work continues to put out the last remaining flames of the 2,946-acre Vista Fire in the San Bernardino National Forest, as well as to repair damage caused by the firefighting efforts and help restore the forest to its natural condition, authorities said.

After igniting northwest of Lytle Creek on July 7 and burning its way through the forest for 13 days, the wildfire was 83% contained on Friday, according to the U.S. Forest Service. It has shown no significant growth this week.

Just under 400 fire personnel remained assigned to the incident.

"Generally speaking, the whole perimeter of the vista fire looks great," California Interagency Incident Management Team 15 Operations Section Chief Travis Ederer said during a morning briefing.

Firefighters were working to finish containment lines and extinguish lingering hot spots on the fire's western edge, he added.

The emphasis haw shifted primarily to efforts to repair the environmental damage cause by firefighting activities.

"We're in full suppression repair mode," Ederer said. "Right now, we're about 25% done on putting everything back how it's supposed to be."

Mitigation efforts included building water bars to minimize erosion and repairing damaged forest roadways, officials said.

Meanwhile, officials also remained vigilant to the ongoing fire risk.

"It's hot today. It's dry," Ederer said. "We're keeping an eye out for any initial attack fires (to) get after them as fast as we can."

An evacuation order for the Mt. Baldy resort was lifted Friday following nearly two weeks of closure prompted by the advancing flames, officials said.

The resort announced online that it was back open for activities.

"This exemption applies only to customers who hold a valid lift or pass or reservation with Mt. Baldy Ski Lifts for the area within the Angeles National Forest," according to the Forest Service statement. "The area closure remains in effect to protect the public and firefighters who are working in the area of the Vista Fire."

Trails and recreational sites in the burn area were expected to remain off-limits through the end of October.

Lytle Creek Road remained open to residents only north of Glen Helen Parkway.

The cause of the Vista Fire remained under invesigation.

No injuries or property damage have been reported.
