The Padres beat the Brewers Friday but it was a costly win, with both Fernando Tatis Jr. and Jurickson Profar forced from the game by injury.
They won 9-5, their third straight victory, behind the bat of Jake Cronenworth, who having hit a game-winning home run Thursday, followed that accomplishment by going 5-for-5 Friday with another homer, a double and two RBIs.
The Padres had seen a 1-0 lead evaporate in the fifth inning as Milwaukee knocked Dylan Cease out of the game by scoring four runs.
But the Friars quickly got Cease – who despite his early exit, had bedeviled the Brewers, striking out 10 – off the hook, scoring two in the bottom of the inning on a Luis Arraez homer and adding two more in the sixth to take a 5-4 lead.
The Brewers, the National League Central division leaders, evened it up again in the seventh, but the Padres took charge for good in their half of the frame with a three-run rally started by Profar.
Cronenworth drove in José Azocar, who ran for the injured Profar, then Manny Machado and Jackson Merrill singled to load the bases. Donovan Solano walked to force in Cronenworth and Machado crossed the plate following an error by second baseman Brice Turang.
Machado continues to heat up as he went 4-for 5 with two runs and an RBI. Stephen Kolek notched his first career win for the Padres with Hoby Milner taking the loss.
The Padres labored for half the game without Tatis, who was hit by a pitch in the third and gave way for pinch hitter Tyler Wade in the fifth. The team said the right fielder, already bothered by a painful quad, now has a left triceps contusion from being plunked.
Profar also has been playing with pain, in his case a balky left knee. He hobbled into second base on his late double, prompting manager Mike Shildt to come and lift him.
Shildt later said “there are lot of guys banged up,” but also noted the team’s “heart” and “grit” in the face of such challenges.
Randy Vásquez takes the mound at 4:15 p.m. Saturday – the game is being broadcast on Fox – against the Brewers’ Carlos Rodriguez.
