Former San Diego State tennis player Hendrik Jebens, competing at Wimbledon, had a first round win with doubles partner Constantin Frantzen.

The No. 58-ranked doubles player in the world, Jebens, 28, along with Frantzen, prevailed Wednesday in the first round over Pavel Kotov and Cristian Rodriguez, winning in straight sets 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-3).

They advance to Friday’s second round in London, where they will face top-ranked doubles team Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden.

Jebens and Frantzen also played in the Australian Open in January falling to Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic in Round 1, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.

Jebens began 2023 ranked 136th in doubles on the ATP tour, a big jump from his No. 435 ranking the year prior. He finished the year ranked 63rd, a previous career-high.

The native of Stuttgart, Germany spent three seasons with SDSU, from 2013-16. He was selected to the All-Mountain West singles team in the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

Jebens played an instrumental role in the 2015 Aztec squad that qualified for the NCAA tournament and beat crosstown opponent University of San Diego in the first round on the way to the regional final.
