Jill Ellis responds to abuse allegations against her, San Diego Wave

By Carrie McDonald , USA TODAY,

Jill Ellis, San Diego Wave club president and former USWNT head coach, denied the allegations of abuse brought against her by a former employee and highlighted the club’s commitment to “fostering a culture of respect, inclusivity, and excellence.”

Former Wave video and creative manager Brittany Alvarado released a lengthy statement to X, formerly Twitter, on Wednesday accusing Ellis of creating an abusive culture at the club.

“The treatment we endured under club president Jill Ellis has been nothing short of life-altering and devastating to our mental health,” Alvarado said . “She has compromised countless lives to advance her narcissistic personal agenda, fostering an environment where abusive behaviors among her subordinates are allowed to flourish.”

Ellis denied Alvarado's accusations in a statement, obtained by USA TODAY Sports, and added that the Wave takes steps to address all employee complaints.

“The false accusations in today’s post are not only personally damaging but also take away from the incredible work and progress we've achieved together as a team. It's important to address this information promptly and effectively,” Ellis said.

“When allegations of mistreatment have been made, we have taken them seriously and investigated them thoroughly. In addition, when appropriate, independent third parties have assisted us in evaluating our workplace. At no time have those evaluations uncovered any wrongdoing by the club,” Ellis added.

Ellis also said that “mental health is a priority” at the Wave and support measures are in place for staff members in need.

“Our staff and I will always honor how someone feels. Over time, we have actively responded to employees who have shown or expressed needs related to their mental health,” Ellis said.

In another statement posted to X hours after Alvarado’s comments, the Wave categorically denied Alvarado's allegations, labeling them “inaccurate and defamatory” and adding that it would pursue “all legal avenues.”

The NWSL said it takes seriously reports of potential misconduct and has investigated allegations within the league thoroughly. The league has acted "when allegations are supported by the facts uncovered," the NWSL said in a statement released Wednesday.

“Our focus remains on moving forward and continuing to build a strong, unified club," Ellis said.
