SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Wayne Mckinney III just might be the solution the San Diego State Aztecs have been needing after star guard Lamont Butler Jr. transferred to Kentucky.

Mckinney may be new to the Aztecs, but is by no means new to the San Diego hoops community.

Mckinney a second-team West Coast Conference player, averaging 30 minutes and 13.5 points at USD. Also leading the team in steals and blocks. Just up the 8 from SDSU.

Mckinney also with a star studded high school career at Coronado HS, where he was named as the CA Division IV state player of the year.

“Especially in Coronado when I was in high school, San Diego State was always the big school. Being able to have the opportunity now to be apart of that. It’s like a dream,” Mckinney reflecting on the new chapter ahead.

Mckinney will now have the opportunity to fill a backcourt sport, and step into a playmaker role with the loss of Darrion Trammell and Lamont Butler. “Whether it’s defense, facilitating passing, getting to the rim, scoring.. everything really connects. Being an all-around threat, whether it’s offensively or defensively, I take ownership in fulfilling that role.”

In the meantime, Wayne can be found competing in the Swish Pro-Am Summer League at Lincoln HS, competing against and alongside other past and present Aztecs.
