As dollar gains strength against the peso, price of meat, fish and poultry going up in Mexico

SAN DIEGO ( Border Report ) — With the dollar slowly regaining its strength against the peso, consumers south of the border are noticing the price of chicken, fish and meat steadily going up, according to Julián Palombo Saucedo, president of Tijuana’s Chamber of Commerce for Tourism and Services.

“You have two factors. If the dollar weakens, then the price to import these goods goes down. But if the dollar gets stronger, then prices go up — something that is happening now,” said Palombo. “The price to import products overall is going up.”

According to Palombo, consumers in cities like Tijuana are seeing the price of meat, poultry and fish, especially salmon, being more expensive than just a month ago.

At the beginning of June, the peso was trading at roughly 16.9 per dollar according to Banxico, Mexico’s National Bank.

As of Wednesday, it was 18.38 pesos per dollar.

“This will benefit people from Southern California who come here to shop, their dollars will go a lot further,” said Palombo. “As for locally grown produce, we should not see an increase in price compared to foods that are imported.”
