    One dead after police shooting in La Jolla

    SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A man was fatally shot by a police officer in La Jolla Saturday morning after he walked toward police with a knife, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

    Sheriff’s officials say several calls came in around 7 a.m. reporting a man with a knife in the 5400 block of La Jolla Boulevard. He was reportedly causing a disturbance in the street.

    Responding San Diego police officers approached the man, described as in his 20s, after he was seen next to a vehicle in the roadway. Authorities said the man walked toward law enforcement with a knife.

    At that point, the officers drew their weapons and asked the man to drop the knife. As explained by the sheriff’s department, a police officer then shot the man.

    Officers provided medical aid to the man until paramedics arrived. The man was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. His identity has not yet been released.

    No officers were injured during the incident.

    The officer involved in the shooting has been employed by the San Diego Police Department for three years and is currently assigned to the Northern Division.

    Per protocol with shootings involving police officers, the sheriff’s Homicide Unit was called in to investigate. At this stage, the motivation and circumstances of the shooting are still under review.

    The intersection at La Jolla Boulevard and Midway Street was closed in all directions for several hours due to the investigation.
