A truck heading south on Interstate 5 past state Route 163 struck and killed a pedestrian early Saturday.

OnScene.TV reported that the incident, at around 2:35 a.m., happened after an ambulance swerved suddenly. Two Marines in the truck told the news service that they saw the pedestrian at that point, but couldn’t avoid hitting him.

A San Diego police cruiser traveling behind the truck could not stop and rear-ended the vehicle in the No. 3 lane.

The male pedestrian ended up under the truck. He died at the scene.

The California Highway Patrol, along with San Diego police and fire personnel, responded. None of the people in the vehicles suffered injuries.

The freeway was shut down, causing a traffic backup that extended beyond 3:15 a.m., with cars stuck in the southbound lanes. Caltrans San Diego, on social media, noted a wreck in the same area just before 3 a.m. and said lanes were re-opened by 8 a.m.
