San Diego State alum Hendrik Jebens, with partner Constantin Frantzen, saw his run at Wimbledon end Wednesday with a quarterfinal loss in men’s doubles.

The duo had won in straight sets in each of their three matches, but they fell in similar fashion to No. 9 seeds Neal Skupski – the defending men’s doubles champion – and his new partner Michael Venus.

They twice prevailed 7-6, 7-6 in matches on the way to the quarterfinals, but Skupski and Venus defeated them 7-6 (7-1), 7-6 (7-1) Wednesday.

Jebens’ and Frantzen’s path through the tournament in London began July 3 with a first-round win over Pavel Kotov and Cristian Rodriguez, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-3).

The unseeded team then knocked out second seeds Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) Saturday.

They earned their spot in the quarterfinals by defeating another unseeded duo, Lloyd Glasspool and Jean-Julien Rojer, 7-6 (7-5). 7-6 (7-3).

The No. 58-ranked doubles player in the world, Jebens, 28, spent three seasons with SDSU, from 2013-16. He was selected to the All-Mountain West singles team in the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

His continued progress is evident. Jebens began 2023 ranked 136th in doubles, a big jump from his No. 435 ranking in 2022. He finished the year at No. 63, a previous career-high.

And prior to Wimbledon he and Frantzen made the semifinals of two tournaments, in Stuttgart and Mallorca, both last month. To begin the year, though, they were eliminated in the first round of the Australian Open.
