An encampment fire early Thursday morning near the northbound Interstate 805 off-ramp to San Ysidro Boulevard left two people burned and hospitalized.

A California Highway Patrol officer spotted the fire just after 5 a.m., and San Diego Fire-Rescue was called to the scene to extinguished the blaze.

The CHP found two people with burn injuries, a 38-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman.

The victims were sleeping under a large tree. A videographer at the scene said the woman told police that she was awakened when another woman poured gasoline on them and set a fire.

The two burn victims were transported to the UC San Diego Burn Center for further treatment.

The CHP will be handling the investigation into the cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding it.
