State Games of America Returns to San Diego for the First Time Since 2011

The 2024 State Games of America, an Olympic-style amateur sports competition featuring medalists from State Games nationwide, is coming to San Diego from July 17-21.

The competition, sponsored by National University, expects thousands of athletes to compete across various venues in San Diego County.

The California State Games successfully bid for the State Games of America to return to San Diego for the first time in over a decade. San Diego last hosted the competition in 2011.

“The State Games of America presented by National University will be a tremendous opportunity to showcase all that San Diego has to offer,” said Sports San Diego CEO Mark Neville. “Our destination has been a proven host to many multi-sport competitions including the California State Games, US Police & Fire Championships, and Transplant Games of America.”

The 22 sports included in the competition include:

• Diving
• Field Hockey
• Figure Skating
• Footgolf
• Judo
• Ninja
• Pickleball
• Rugby
• Skateboarding
• Softball
• Surfing
• Swimming
• Table Tennis
• Track & Field
• Water Polo
• Wrestling

The competition is back on a biennial schedule, following a three year gap from 2019-2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Ames/Des Moines, Iowa last hosted the event in 2022.

The Athlete Kick-Off Party is Thursday, July 18 at 4:00 PM at the Four Points by Sheraton San Diego. Opening ceremonies will take place Friday, July 19 at the Pechanga Sports Arena at 6:30 PM.
