Authorities sought Tuesday to identify and track down a thief who fatally shot a woman this week during a robbery at a Talmadge-area apartment complex.

Patrol officers responding to a report of a shooting at the residential complex in the 4400 block of Euclid Avenue shortly before 9 p.m. Monday found the 38-year-old victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound inside one of the rental units, according to the San Diego Police Department.

The woman, whose name was withheld pending family notification, died at the scene.

Detectives have determined that the killer, a man dressed in dark- colored clothing, entered the apartment, pulled a gun on the victim and a 59- year-old man who lives in the unit and stole the resident’s wallet, SDPD homicide Lt. Jud Campbell said.

The intruder shot the victim when she “intervened” in an attempt to thwart the holdup, the lieutenant said. The shooter then left the apartment and fled the area on foot.

A short time later, officers spotted a man in dark clothing running through the neighborhood, detained him and found a gun on him, Campbell said. Investigators ultimately determined, however, that he was not the man who had committed the robbery and fatal shooting. The detainee was jailed on suspicion of weapons charges and a probation violation.

The shooter remained outstanding as of late Tuesday morning.

“Detectives are continuing to investigate this incident, including processing the scene for physical evidence, attempting to locate and interview witnesses and canvassing the area for surveillance footage,” Campbell said.
