SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — U.S. Representative Juan Vargas (CA-52) held a press conference Thursday regarding his recent congressional delegation trip to Mexico.

The lawmaker, along with other U.S. officials, held discussions with Mexican officials to address the ongoing issue of Tijuana River Valley pollution.

During the trip, Rep. Vargas met with Mexico President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, President-Elect Claudia Sheinbaum, U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar, Secretary of Foreign Affairs Alicia Brcena, among other.

Collectively, the officials highlighted the need for Mexico to continue to do its part to address the toxic pollution. This is coming in the form of a sewage treatment plant that is currently being built.

Rep. Vargas said though he’s unsure if it will be ready by September 2024, he’s feeling positive about the discussions and forward direction.
