Hit restaurant pop-up, Sonic the Hedgehog Speed Café, returning to East Village

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A pop-up restaurant centered around everyone’s favorite speedy blue hedgehog is set to make a grand return to downtown San Diego during Comic-Con.

Sonic the Hedgehog Speed Café will be back open for business beginning on the convention’s first official day for another three-month residency in the East Village, as part of the ongoing collaboration between the gaming brand SEGA and the Secret Sauce Society.

The temporary eatery first debuted in San Diego last year , before it opened up shops in Los Angeles and Houston.

The latest iteration of the café is going to be heavily inspired by the SEGA game, “Shadow the Hedgehog: The Ultimate Life-Form,” according to organizers, in honor of the brand-new gaming campaign “ Fearless: Year of Shadow .”

With the theme, the cafe will have a number of exclusive Shadow items and merchandise, as well as surprises from SEGA and the Secret Sauce Society Team.

Although those who visited the Speed Café last year will see some familiar things on the menu, including Sonic the Hedgehog’s Classic Chili Dog, a spicy fried chicken “Knuckles Sandwich,” “Piko Piko Tenders,” and sides like “Golden Ring” onion rings and “Fast Fries.”

There also will be a number of specialty drinks for fans to sip on inspired by characters in the Sonic universe, like the Blue Blur blueberry slush (Sonic); Smashing Echidna fruit punch slush (Knuckles); and Team Dark mocha milkshake (Shadow).

The grand opening of the Sonic the Hedgehog Speed Cafe will begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 25 at 910 J St. Space 2. According to organizers, the first 25 people in line will be able to receive special Sonic giveaways from SEGA in honor of the opening.

The official blue mascot will also be onsite throughout all four days of celebration for Comic-Con, surprising guests for autographs. Fans should anticipate other appearances at the pop-up throughout the weekend.

The pop-up will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. after its grand opening throughout its three-month tenure.
