Transit riders today for the first time can use contactless payments such as their credit card or mobile payments on their phone to pay their fare. This announcement comes just in time for big events such as San Diego’s pride weekend, Comic Con International Convention and the opening day of Del Mar’s 85th racing season.

Instead of relying on pre-loaded pronto cards or the app, passengers can now use most debit or credit cards, smartphones, and even wearables like Apple Watches, Fitbits and Samsung Watches.

“Advocating for a contactless payment option has been a top priority for RideSD for the last two years,” said Connor Proctor, vice president of the transit-oriented nonprofit RideSD. “Together with our transit operators we are making the transit system more accessible for everyone. Contactless payment will be a great asset for transit riders for many years to come.”

The new system is now available on MTS buses and Trolleys, and NCTD’s COASTER, SPRINTER, FLEX and BREEZE services.
