CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Guardians (59-37) and San Diego Padres (50-50) are set to play again in front of another packed house Saturday.

In Friday's series opener, the first game after the MLB All-Star break, the Guardians broke open a tight game late to beat the Padres 7-0 and maintain their ownership of the American League's best record.

Here's how Saturday night's game unfolded.

Padres win 7-0 over Guardians a night after Guardians top Padres 7-0

The Padres topped the Guardians 7-0 Saturday night one evening after the Guards beat the Pads 7-0.

San Diego's pitching was excellent Saturday as the Padres improved to 51-50. Dylan Cease pitched seven shutout innings, struck out 10 and limited the Guardians (59-38) to one hit and one walk. Jeremiah Estrada pitched a scoreless eighth and Yuki Matsui pitched a scoreless ninth.

"He had everything going tonight, 96 [mph], 99 [mph on his fastball], top of the zone, bottom of the zone, slider, curveball, hitting corners," Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said of Cease. "... He was somekind of special tonight and it showed. We had a hard time getting anything going. He just dominated us tonight."

Vogt said Guardians starter Gavin Williams "struggled."

"He battled, but the fastball command wasn't there," Vogt said. "He was trying to figure out how to land off-speed [pitches] and got himself into some tough counts."

Padres lead Guardians 7-0 in eighth inning

The Padres scored four runs in the eighth inning off of Guardians reliever Spencer Howard to make it 7-0. David Peralta hit a solo home run, Luis Campusano singled in Ha-Seong Kim and Jake Cronenworth hit a two-run home run that also scored Campusano.
