The San Diego Legion fell just short of advancing to the Western Conference Final, losing to the Seattle Seawolves 30-28 in the opening round of the playoffs.

San Diego opened the scoring by going up 3-0, with Seattle quickly tying the match back up, thanks to Mack Mason, the MLR leading scorer.

Fast forward to before the 15 minute mark, and the Seawolves trailing 6-3 after a successful kick, fullback Duncan Matthews put the Seawolves in front 8-6 with a successful try. The two-point kick was no good.

After another Mack kick put Seattle up 11-6, the fans in attendance saw great goal line defense from the home team to keep the Legion from scoring.

What immediately followed was another successful try from Seattle, this time from lock Rhyno Herbst, to go up 18-6.

San Diego finished the half with a penalty shot to trail 18-9.

The first 10 minutes of the second half saw good defense from both sides.

The Legion finally saw a breakthrough with a successful try from hooker Cyrille Cama in the 62nd minute, crawling back to trail by only four after an unsuccessful two-point attempt. Seattle was awarded a penalty try to go up by double digits again, followed later by a try from flanker Pago Haini.

This put Seattle up 30-14, and while San Diego would crawl closer with a try from back/wing/center Tomas Aoake and a penalty try to get within two, it was too big of a deficit to overcome.

San Diego’s season comes to a close, just one year after losing in the Championship Final. Seattle has now won nine of the 17 matchups between the two teams.

Seattle’s quest for a third championship is still alive. The Seawolves will host the Dallas Jackals Sunday, July 28 at 1:00 p.m. in the Western Conference Final.
