    San Diego County Waterfront Park.

A new, free-of-cost recreation area opened on July 22 in the northeast corner of Waterfront Park on the Embardadero.

Once home to an underused portion of the park, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Monday morning at Waterfront Park, unveiling a small garden and full-fledged active recreation area.

San Diego County’s Department of Parks and Recreation and Board of Supervisors Vice Chair Terra Lawson-Remer hosted the ceremony, with organizers of the event hosting team-activities on the basketball court and a interactive pickleball workshop after the ceremony.

The recreation area provides several amenities for people looking to gain a serious workout or enjoy a leisurely game with friends. The area features a basketball court, two pickleball courts, a five-station fitness apparatus, table tennis, and a fenced off-leash dog area with agility equipment.

The 1.25-acre recreation area is also lined with drought-tolerant trees and plants line to add ambiance, support environmental sustainability measures, and buffer sound from sports activities.

The active recreation area will be open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Equipment check-out will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. during summer hours and from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. from fall to spring. Learn more at https://www.sdparks.org/
