    Airlines speak on travel delays at San Diego Airport

    SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Traveler delays continued Monday as Delta works to recover from a global IT outage that stranded travelers Friday and over the weekend and disrupted systems that relied on the technology.

    Four days after the initial outage, travelers at San Diego International Airport and across the country were still experiencing delays.

    In total, 244 flights were delayed at the San Diego International Airport Monday, along with 25 cancelations.

    While Delta is still working to fully recover from the faulty CrowdStrike software update, the Associated Press reports most carriers aside from Delta have begun to recover and were returning to nearly normal levels of service disruptions on Monday.

    However, the delays have been impacting not just one carrier as flights at San Diego International Airport with Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Frontier Airlines, United Airlines, American Airlines, Allegiant Air, British Airways, JetBlue, and Spirit Airlines all had some delays Monday.

    FOX 5/KUSI reached out to several airlines that operate at SAN for confirmation on what has been causing these delays.

    The United Airlines CEO said in a statement, in part, obtained by FOX 5/KUSI, “Today, our operation is back to normal and for the last 24 hours, our systems, tools and schedules have been stable – our recovery was quick (given the circumstances) but not immediate, and I want to thank our employees and our customers for helping to get us through the past 36 hours especially.”

    A Southwest Airlines spokesperson confirmed to FOX 5/KUSI the airline was not impacted by the technology issue that did affect other airlines. They attributed the delays Monday as possibly weather related at other locations across the country.

    Alaska Airlines also responded to FOX 5/KUSI, mentioning they were “mostly unimpacted” by the IT outage as they do not use CrowdStrike. The airline said, in part, “We experienced challenges with our weather data, but our dispatchers and IT teams were able to utilize a backup process to keep the operation running. We are working hard to accommodate as many impacted guests from other airlines onto our flights, and we’re grateful to our teams for taking great care in keeping guests moving.”

    Global technology outage disrupts flights in San Diego Friday

    Delta has been very active on social media throughout the weekend as travelers continued to experience delays. Sunday night, the airline posted on X they are offering hotel, meal and ground transportation reimbursements to impacted customers.

    Delta has also extended travel waivers for impacted customers to cover July 19 through 23.

    The company on Monday said it would take “another couple days” before “the worst is clearly behind us,” AP reports .

    “We’ve got everyone around the company working around the clock to get this operation where it needs to be,” Delta CEO Ed Bastian said in a video message to employees on Monday, according to the airline. “Keep taking great care of our customers and each other in the coming days.”
