San Diego Padres starting pitcher Dylan Cease threw a no-hitter during a 3-0 road win against the Washington Nationals on Thursday (July 25).

Cease, 28, recorded nine strikeouts and three walks while retiring all 27 batters through nine innings, improving his record to 10-8 and adding to his MLB leading 167 strikeouts in 131 innings. Cease joined teammate Joe Musgrove as the only players to have thrown a no-hitter in Padres history, with Musgrove having also done so during a 3-0 road win against the Texas Rangers in April 2021.

Thursday's game marked the fourth time in six starts that Cease allowed one or fewer hits, lowering his ERA from 4.14 to 3.50 during that span.

The lack of runs didn't, however, make the game any quicker as it was delayed 76 minutes during due to a storm making its way through Washington, D.C., which took place during the top of the first inning, prior to Cease throwing his first pitch in the bottom half. The no-hitter was also saved by a unique fly ball in which second baseman Xander Bogaerts appeared to lose control of a pop fly, which was caught by teammate Jackson Merrill before hitting the ground.

The Padres are currently on a five-game winning streak and are 5-1 since returning from the All-Star break.
