Eastlake sophomore wins state 3200-meter title

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Eastlake’s Jaelyn Williams makes long races look easy. She is dominating the CIF championship, setting a meet record in the 3200 and setting a CIF record in the mile by running a 4:40.

“I love distance. When I do a great job, it’s just like a really nice feeling, especially since it’s hard to do,” she said.

Williams says she was “filled with joy” because she had tried to get a CIF record since freshman year.

The 16-year-old entered the state championship ranked second in all of California.

“It’s really nice, just to be at that level,” Williams said.

Choosing to forgo the mile, where she’s about 30 seconds away from the women’s world record, she instead ran the 3200 meters.

“I wanted to get that goal of going under 10 in the 32, it was a pretty close choice,” Williams said.

Williams made the right choice and won a state title in the 3200, running a 9:57.

Although she has earned several awards and broken records, Williams’ most amazing feat might be in the classroom.

“4.67, so the majority of my time I’m working on school and working at track,” Williams said.

The All-American is not satisfied with being ranked seventh in the nation. One day, she hopes to take her talents to the Olympic stage.

“As of right now, I think I still need to work a little bit. I think, if I put in enough work, I could get there eventually,” Williams said.
