SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — City of San Diego crews are set to begin repaving another major artery through Clairemont and Kearny Mesa this week.

According to city officials, long-awaited street repairs will begin along Balboa Avenue overnight on Monday, building off the recently-completed repaving work on Convoy Street and Clairemont Mesa Boulevard.

The work falls under Mayor Todd Gloria’s “Sexy Streets” initiative, which aims to improve more than 50 miles of highly traveled streets that have been neglected with maintenance work, and elements of the Kearny Mesa Community Plan.

“By investing in main thoroughfares like Balboa Avenue, Convoy Street and Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, we’re not just fixing roads; we’re enhancing the quality of life, improving connectivity, and supporting economic vitality in our communities,” Gloria said in a statement on Friday.

The work will take place along the stretch of Balboa Avenue that runs from Kearny Villa Road to Genesee Avenue. Over the last few weeks, crews have been conducting preparatory work by cutting out and replacing portions of the existing asphalt before going back in for resurfacing.

According to city officials, this segment of Balboa Avenue received scores ranging from poor to failing in the city’s Pavement Condition Assessment.

Repaving the roadway is anticipated to take four weeks, officials added — two weeks of night work dedicated to the asphalt overlaying and two weeks of daytime work for lane striping.

This will be the third asphalt overlay project San Diego crews have undertaken in Kearny Mesa over the last few months.

The first focused on Convoy Street from Kearny Mesa Road to State Route 52, which began in September after a water and wastewater pipe replacement project. The second wrapped up last month along a 1.2-mile segment of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard — from Shawline Street to Kearny Mesa Road — where there was a concentration of potholes.

According to the City, asphalt overlay is the most expensive and intensive type of road repair, and is reserved specifically for badly deteriorated roads.

Under the latest budget passed by the city , about $107.7 million was allocated towards overlay reconstruction projects, while $35.3 was dedicated to slurry seal work — a type of road treatment that is meant to extend the life of pavement.

With these funding sources, the city aims to repair a combined 225 miles of roadway, according to local officials.
