In an age of reboots and spin-offs, the Star Trek franchise heads boldly into the future. Despite Star Trek: Discovery having its fifth and final season, and Star Trek: Picard closing out its three-season run last year on Paramount+, fans and show executives alike are looking forward. One of the most highly anticipated potential spin-offs is Star Trek: Legacy. It started as a bit of a fan campaign, but caught on like wildfire among cast and executives. The show would be a continuation of the events at the end of Picard. It would follow Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) as she captains the newest USS Enterprise. The show would likely also include the return of Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd) and Jack Crusher (Ed Speelers).

Some of the most beloved episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series are laugh-out-loud comedies. Although the 1966-1969 series is often lauded for its ahead-of-its-time diversity and heady science fiction concepts, what all of this serious praise leaves out is that Star Trek was really fun, and often, quite funny. In fact, for decades, the most consistently cited fan-favorite episode of them all was David Gerrold’s 1967 romp, “The Trouble With Tribbles.” And when you start looking at some of the bright spots of TOS, more and more comedic episodes start cropping up. Twenty years ago, one science fiction TV show pulled off something that should not have even been possible: to reimagine a wonky 1978 sci-fi series as an utterly new universe. That series was Battlestar Galactica, which began with a Sci-Fi Channel (not yet “SyFy”) miniseries at the end of 2003, and then from 2004 to 2009 became a critically acclaimed series not just within science fiction circles, but also a game changer for the entire television landscape. Before streaming was a thing, and before the word “reboot” was tossed around casually, Battlestar Galactica was the reboot that everybody binged, which sometimes required waiting for the Netflix DVDs to arrive in the mail.
