'This Could Be His Patrick Mahomes for Andy Reid!' - NFL Analyst

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is helping his team get ready to play the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday. And there is a possible similarity between the two teams that one ESPN analyst thinks is more than coincidence.

Former NFL center and current ESPN NFL analyst Jeff Saturday thinks that Brock Purdy can be for 49ers coach Mike Shanahan what Patrick Mahomes is to Chiefs' coach Andy Reid.

"This could be his Patrick Mahomes for Andy Reid," Saturday said on Get Up this morning. "Andy Reid couldn't get over the hump. He was 11-13 [in the playoffs] before Mahomes comes in."

No, Saturday wasn't saying that Purdy is the next coming of Mahomes.

"I didn't say as a player, but I said as what could help his coach go from a really good coach to a Hall of Fame coach overnight," Saturday responded.

Purdy was drafted last overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, a pick known as "Mr. Irrelevant." Mahomes was picked No. 10 overall by the Chiefs in 2017. But their paths have led them to meet in Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday.

Purdy has been criticized for being just a product of the offense he's in and labeled a game manager - which can be taken in a negative context. But the Iowa State product takes it all in stride.

"I feel like it can be a compliment at times, where it's like, 'Alright, you've got a guy that can come in and run the system well,'" Purdy said this week. "I feel like that's a compliment. I think you're doing things right, mentally, and obviously, you're good enough to be able to hit guys that are open and make plays."
