The Giants have made a signing. It only took until spring training was well underway, but according to multiple reports, San Francisco has signed Matt Chapman, a player that was largely expected to sign for the team.

Per Jeff Passan of ESPN, it is a three-year, $54 million deal for Chapman, but he will have opt-outs after each of the first two years. It starts at $20 million this season, then ticks down $2 million per year each of the following seasons. It's a one-plus-one-plus-one.

The deal, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, does not take them out of the running for star pitcher Blake Snell.

Chapman is obviously an elite defensive third baseman, having won two platinum gloves and four gold gloves. He also brings power to the lineup, slugging double-digit home runs in every season in the majors, with an average of roughly 22 per season, next to a career .240 batting average.

Slusser reported that Chapman is expected to stay at third base, which puts J.D. Davis' and Casey Schmitt's roles into play. Davis, more than Schmitt, could be a trade candidate.
