La Canfora: Teams believe 49ers may be willing to trade Deebo Samuel

The 49ers' offseason is in full swing, and there are still some needs to be addressed in the secondary, and at linebacker, after the heel turn by Eric Kendricks.

But one looming subject of intrigue is the potential departure of Deebo Samuel. He struggled mightily in the Super Bowl, and if the 49ers extend Brandon Aiyuk, might they ship off Samuel?

Jason La Canfora of 105.7 The Fan joined the Morning Roast Thursday morning and said that other teams believe the 49ers will be willing to part with Samuel, and that the Baltimore Ravens already have. Ravens GM Eric DeCosta made fun of that claim Thursday, and La Canfora responded on Twitter .

La Canfora said he thinks there are "multiple teams calling."

"There are definitely teams out there that believe when all is said and done, that there might be a price that you can pry Deebo out of there," La Canfora said.

If the 49ers were to trade Samuel now, or any time before June 1, they would eat $21.72 million in dead cap this season, saving $6.9 million from his scheduled $28.63 million cap hit. Trading him after June 1 would leave just a $6.63 million cap hit, and save $22 million in cap space. They would owe roughly $15 million in dead cap next year.

Arik Armstead was designated as a post-June 1 cut, which will save San Francisco $18 million in cap space in June, but cost roughly $15.5 million in dead cap in 2025.

The problem is that money can't really be used in this year's free agency period. With Samuel, it would be an approach that means any compensation would be for next year's draft.

There is an argument, however, that if the 49ers are going to trade Samuel, eating his dead money this season, rather than having a combined $30-plus million dead cap from him and Armstead, and getting compensation in this year's draft, is worthwhile.

They could use the draft capital gained from the trade immediately, along with the nearly $7 million in cap space. But Samuel is arguably Kyle Shanahan's favorite player, and someone he views like a son. Would Shanahan really be willing to ship him off? That's a question the 49ers have to face.
