Mike Silver: 49ers interested in starting safety, could make move for 4-time All-Pro

The San Francisco 49ers are not done making moves in free agency. They have all but locked up their defensive line depth, and now the focus shifts elsewhere.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle's Mike Silver, the 49ers are looking for a starting safety, and Talanoa Hufanga, the 2022 All-Pro recovering from a torn ACL -- and who thrives around the box, but less so in coverage -- is not guaranteed to get his starting job back.

From Silver's latest article, which can be read in full here , the 49ers are interested in a starting safety, and possibly an elite one:

"With the safety market somewhat oversaturated, the Niners might be able to land a big name such as Justin Simmons (four times a second-team All-Pro during his Denver career) or a less decorated player such as the Commanders' Kam Curl or the Colts' Julian Blackmon."

The 30-year-old Simmons was cut for cap purposes by the Broncos after a third-straight second-team All-Pro season. He has never had fewer than two interceptions in a season, and led the league with six in 2022. Both Curl and Blackmon are excellent as well.

Silver also reports that the 49ers are looking at the cornerback position, which, depending on availability, could affect whether Deommodore Lenoir starts in the slot or outside next season.

The full article can be read here , and details the 49ers' now moot interest in the Chargers' Joey Bosa (restructured his contract) and some of the machinations of where Steve Wilks' tenure went wrong.
