Geltzeiler details why 'trading Kuminga would be an enormous mistake'

One of the raging questions for the Warriors this offseason is whether it would be worth trading Jonathan Kuminga if it meant upgrading to a star player.

Sirius XM's Brian Geltzeiler joined Steiny and Guru Tuesday to discuss the Warriors' outlook, and whether a Kuminga trade would make sense.

Geltzeiler said the Warriors have a leg up on the other, aging, first-round exits in the Suns and Lakers because the Warriors have youth to lean on. He thinks trading Kuminga would be disastrous.

"Here's what I would say regarding the Warriors in that vein," Geltzeiler said. "The Warriors are unique and they're very different than the Lakers and they're very different than the Suns in this way. They actually have a promising young core of players. Jonathan Kuminga is gonna be a really good player and they will make an enormous mistake if they trade him.

"And how many teams started a rookie and made the play-in tournament this year, in Brandin Podziemski. That's good. Guy plays multiple positions in the backcourt. He can shoot, he can guard, he can pass. He plays hard all the time. What a revelation Trayce Jackson-Davis was. What a nice complement next to Draymond in the frontcourt doing all the little things athletic as hell. Another really good young player. And I still think there's a future with Moody."

However, and this is a huge caveat, he thinks the Warriors will need Joe Lacob - who said he wants to get under the luxury tax - to continue to pay the repeater tax to make the two timelines work.

"The Warriors have some of what's driving these other good, young teams to be really good," Geltzeiler said. "The Warriors have that. The two timeline thing is kind of in place right now for the Warriors if they make the right moves, and you keep everybody on the floor, and of course, and this is very important, if ownership was willing to continue to operate in the repeater tax."
