    Here's how to get around The City during Bay to Breakers

    Bay to Breakers, the annual 7½-mile dash from the Embarcadero to Ocean Beach , returns to San Francisco this weekend and so, too, do a number of street closures and transit detours.

    Transportation officials in The City said the event will cause major reroutes and delays. Other Bay Area public-transit agencies are offering extra service to get participants and spectators to the race.

    The first wave of racers will take off from the finish line Sunday morning at 8 a.m., with the last wave expected to start running at 8:45 a.m. Organizers are prepping for the event well in advance of the race, with street closures going into effect Saturday night.

    Here’s what you need to know.

    San Francisco street closures

    Three streets near the starting line will be closed from 7 p.m. Saturday to 11 a.m. Sunday: Howard Street between The Embarcadero and Beale Street, Steuart Street south of Mission Street, and Spear Street between Mission and Folsom streets.

    Main Street will close between Mission and Folsom streets from 7 p.m. Saturday to 5 p.m. Sunday.

    Several streets along the race route will close Sunday from 3 a.m. to 11 a.m.:

    Beale Street between Mission and Folsom streetsFremont Street between Mission and Folsom streetsFirst Street between Market and Folsom streets (Muni allowed from Market to Mission)Second Street between Mission and Folsom streetsNew Montgomery Street between Mission and Howard streetsHoward Street between Beal and 3rd streets

    Between 5 a.m. and 11 a.m. Sunday, Beale and Spear streets will close between Market and Mission streets. So, too, will Mission Street between Fremont and Steuart streets, as will Market between Drumm and Steuart streets. Howard Street will close between 3rd and 9th streets from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday, and so will 9th Street between Howard and Market streets.

    Steiner Street closes between Grove and Hayes streets from 5 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on race day, as does Scott Street between Grove and Hayes. Hayes Street will close between Market and Divisadero streets from 6 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

    Baker Street closes between Oak and Fell streets from 5 a.m. to 2 p.m., while Fell Street between Divisadero and Stanyan streets will close from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. that same day. Divisadero Street between Grove and Oak streets will also close from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m.

    From 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, the following streets will close near Ocean Beach:

    Cabrillo between 46th Avenue and La PlayaBalboa Street between 46th Avenue and Great HighwayPoint Lobos between 48th Avenue and Great Highway

    The following streets near the race’s finish-line festival area will close from 9 p.m. Saturday to 4 p.m. Sunday:

    La Playa between Cabrillo and Fulton streetsFulton (westbound) between Great Highway and 46th AvenueFulton (eastbound) between Great Highway and 48th AvenueLincoln Way between Great Highway and La Playa

    Additional street closures during this time include Great Highway between Sloat Boulevard and John F. Kennedy Drive, as well as multiple entrances to Golden Gate Park.

    Muni service changes

    The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency is encouraging people to avoid areas affected by Bay to Breakers if they are not participating in the race as runners or spectators.

    The 5X, 5R, 28, N Judah and S Shuttle lines will add service to help get people to the race. Muni’s Market Street Subway service is also opening early at 6 a.m. to help people make it to the race on time. Trains will not stop at the Civic Center, Powell and Montgomery stations for normal weekend services until approximately 7:40 a.m.

    Nearly 25 Muni bus lines will be rerouted as early as 5 a.m. Sunday morning, with detours expected to last as late as 10 p.m. The following lines will run atypical schedules Sunday:

    The F Market and Wharves line is also being rerouted for Harvey Milk Day celebrations that are taking place Sunday.

    Other transit changes

    Caltrain will run two limited-stop trains arriving in The City before the race starts. BART will also run four trains with limited stops before regular weekend service begins.

    The following Peninsula and East Bay BART stations will be open Sunday to pick up passengers and drop them off at the Embarcadero BART station prior to the race.
