The San Francisco Giants have life for the first time in a few years. They have won 10 of their last 12 games, with a young group sparking a corps of veterans, many of whom were added over the offseason.

They have gritted out tough, often come-from-behind wins, the latest of which was a 1-0 bullpen shutout win against Phillies ace Zach Wheeler.

Even with the influx of talent, Giants broadcaster Dave Flemming believes that manager Bob Melvin has been a key part of the shift. He joined the Morning Roast Wednesday morning and explained why the Giants are playing harder under Melvin than Gabe Kapler.

"There are so many layers to running an organization, but I think what Bob has decided is look, I'm the on-field manager," Flemming said. "My job is to win the game that's right in front of me. And to me, that's a Bruce Bochy trait, too. It's easy as a manager to get caught up in the big planning and mapping stuff out.

"And if I have, not a criticism for Gabe Kapler, I do think that Gabe often would do this where he's thinking one, two, three, four days ahead. And I guess my issue with that is I do think that subliminally that sends a message to your team. It sends a message to your team of like, yeah, we can play for another day, or this game may not be as important.

"And I think Bob's feeling is my job as a manager is win every single game. Worry about tomorrow after we win this game today. And I think it has trickled to the players to where there is that urgency to win the game that's in front of us and we're not going to worry about usage and who's off and what our lineup is going to look like tomorrow and who's hurt and who's in there and who's not.

"We're just going to focus on winning this game and it's a very healthy way to go let the front office, let the roster get managed by someone else. Let those decisions get made by someone else. You go down and win a freaking game. And that's what I think Bob's message to this team has been. It's really working."
