New 49ers defender 'ready to impress' in whichever role he's given

Green Bay Packers linebacker De'Vondre Campbell.

The status of 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw has remained up in the air since he tore his Achilles during Super Bowl LVIII.

As a result, San Francisco decided it was best to sign some depth in former All-Pro linebacker De'Vondre Campbell to a one-year deal in March.

The 30-year-old has been learning the defense for the past few months and should be the favorite to fill in for Greenlaw. Although, he's not expecting anything.

"That's really not up to me," Campbell said via Justin Melo of 49ersWebzone.com. "My goal right now is to try to learn as much as I can about this defense so I can help them. Whatever is required of me, I'm going to be ready to impress the coaching staff. I want to get on the field because I know nothing is promised or guaranteed."

Campbell has also dealt with injuries the last couple of years, playing in 11 games last season and 13 in 2022. However, he has still been productive on the field, registering 171 tackles, one fumble recovery, two interceptions, four passes defensed, and one touchdown during that span.

The 49ers hope this production will continue until Greenlaw can return to the field.

As for Campbell, it was a no-brainer to join San Francisco when the team called.

"They called me and told me they wanted me. It was a really good opportunity for myself to join a contender," Campbell added. "I'm just trying to make the most of it. I don't have any expectations really. I'm just trying to impress this coaching staff and let the chips fall where they may."

The 49ers have come up short of winning a Super Bowl in the past few seasons. Maybe Campbell will be the missing piece to raise the franchise's sixth Lombardi Trophy.
