    Tony's Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco ranks second for best U.S. pizza

    A hometown favorite makes the second-best pizza in the U.S., according to a Italian media company's newly released rankings.

    State of play: Tony's Pizza Napoletana , run by chef Tony Gemignani, is the only Bay Area restaurant honored in 50 Top Pizza 's U.S. category.


    What they're saying : "Whether it's Neapolitan pizza, New York style, Detroit style, Sicilian or any other style of pizza, Tony Gemignani is a true guarantee," 50 Top Pizza wrote in its ranking for the North Beach establishment.

    • "The real novelty is the possibility of trying a tasting menu, lasting two and a half hours, for seven pizza tastings, offering a truly immersive journey into the world of pizza."

    Zoom in: At Tony's, pizzas are handcrafted using Cirigliano wood-burning ovens. Its menu includes an array of pizza styles, including classic American, Italian, Sicilian and Neapolitan.

    • The restaurant says it imports authentic Neapolitan and Italian ingredients every week and supports locally grown organic farmers and artisan cheesemakers.
    • Customers can also select from a full bar that includes Italian and California wines, aperitifs, digestives and cocktails.

    Tony's has consistently made "best of" lists since opening in 2009. This year, it's topped only by New York City's Una Pizza Napoletana.
