A forecast of light rain and cruel heat couldn’t keep Din Tai Fung fans away. On Thursday, July 18, the Taiwanese restaurant chain celebrated the grand opening of its New York location at 1633 Broadway, between West 50th and 51st streets. As the first Din Tai Fung on the East Coast out of 181 locations worldwide, fans crowded outside the doors ahead of the opening.

I have one complaint to make about Eel Bar, a new Iberian wine bar at 252 Broome Street, just east of Allen: No eel!. The restaurant from six partners, Nialls Fallon, Russell Perkins, Nick Perkins, Leah Campbell, and Taylor Ward, with food from chef Aaron Crowder, Eel Bar is the successor to Cervo’s, which opened in 2017, landing a Michelin Bib Gourmand and one star from the New York Times. The restaurant was ahead of its time, as it turned out showy and, for some, challenging food (shrimp heads, for example), straddling the line between a wine bar and a full-fledged restaurant. Subsequently, places like Claud, Chambers, and Demo have carried on this brinksmanship.

Kazzan’s ramen, which is made up of its signature combination of thick noodles, vegetables, and fatty pork, is served in a hot stone bowl that’s heated up to an estimated 662 degrees Fahrenheit. Diners get to experience the “volcano” when the dish is topped with hot soup that’s poured through a cylindrical top, resulting in a rising hot steam that resembles a volcanic eruption.
