One of the biggest storylines from the 2024 NBA offseason is the end of the Golden State Warriors Big 3 era. Klay Thompson hit free agency and opted not to return to the franchise that selected him 11th overall in the 2011 NBA Draft.

Instead, Klay Thompson agreed to a three-year, $50 million deal with the Dallas Mavericks . To finalize the deal, a sign-and-trade was completed, which also included the Charlotte Hornets .

To help facilitate the deal, the Hornets took on Josh Green from the Mavericks. Dallas sent two second-round picks to the Golden State Warriors to get them to sign off on the deal as well.

While it felt like a divorce between Klay Thompson and the Golden State Warriors was coming, seeing it become official certainly makes people feel a certain way. This is the end of the last dynasty we saw in the NBA.

From the sounds of it, the organization was not showing Thompson the kind of respect he was looking for. According to Anthony Slater of The Athletic, the veteran sharpshooter didn’t want Stephen Curry vouching for him; he wanted to see how much the Warriors valued him without urging from his Splash Brother.

“I was told that Klay requested of Steph, ‘Don’t exert your influence. Don’t demand that they do right by me financially. I want them to, want to [do that on their own]'” Slater said on The Morning Roast, 97.5 The Game .

It is easy to see why Klay Thompson would feel slighted. He watched the team sign Andrew Wiggins and Draymond Green to extensions the last two offseasons, but they didn’t show the same urgency in bringing him back.

During the 2023-24 season, constant role changes and being removed from the starting lineup likely played a part in Klay Thompson’s decision to leave as well. In his opinion, he wasn’t being shown the same respect for the work he had done with the team.

It was never about money, either. Had that been the deciding factor in where Klay Thompson played, he would be on the Los Angeles Lakers, who offered a longer contract and more money than the Mavericks did.

As the old saying goes, all good things must come to an end. For the Golden State Warriors and Klay Thompson, the 2024 offseason was the end of their incredible run.
