Draymond Green opens lid on Klay Thompson's raw emotions in private discussion

Draymond Green has admitted that he couldn't hold back the tears after Klay Thompson told him that he would be leaving the Golden State Warriors .

Thompson had his options this off-season, but landed on leaving the team that drafted him 13 years ago to join the Dallas Mavericks , joining the NBA finalists alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving . The shooting guard signed a three-year, $50 million contract on Monday bringing an end to his time with the Warriors after 11 seasons with the team.

Alongside Steph Curry and Green, Thompson won four NBA championships in seven years in a dominant period, with the team going on to be considered one of the greatest in the history of the sport.

But over the last few years, injuries look to have caught up with Thompson, with his athleticism and defensive abilities taking a hit while his shooting efficiency numbers have decreased over the last three years.

The Warriors needed to do something to their roster after two disappointing seasons, and have landed on letting Thompson leave the team. This past week, Thompson made both Curry and Green aware of his decision - with the latter sharing how he felt on the move.

Speaking on his podcast, Green said: "When Klay told me, I was just able to listen. It wasn't like a, 'Yo, we could finish like this.' Or like, 'You should rethink this.' It was just like, 'Wow, alright. Congrats bro, I'm happy for you. That's dope."

Green joined the Warriors the year after Thompson had in 2012, with the two spending their careers together with the team - obviously becoming close friends in the process, something Green added will not change.

He said: "You know, to obviously reassure, that changes nothing for us. It changes the basketball court, obviously. But the relationships, they are what they are. They are forever. I think I might have dropped a couple of tears."

The Warriors have also waived legendary point guard Chris Paul this week, with them setting their sights on All-Star big man Lauri Markkanen.

The seven-footer would be a player that the team has looked to add for multiple years, in need of a big man who is capable of stretching the floor for the likes of Curry, Green and Wiggins - while being a shooter replacing Thompson and being an upgrade as a rebounder and on the defensive end.
