The more that comes out about Klay Thompson and the Warriors, the more it sounds like the relationship was doomed a long time ago. Thompson departed for the Dallas Mavericks on a three-year, $50 million deal in a sign-and-trade.
That trade gave the Warriors 2025 and 2031 second-round picks and an important, roughly $16 million trade exception that they reportedly will use to acquire Kyle Anderson on a three-year, $27 million deal , and which they reportedly may use to acquire Buddy Hield.
But the story Wednesday is that, according to ESPN's Kendra Andrews and Ramona Shelburne , Thompson was "miserable," over the last year while his role changed and his body declined.
According to the report, six weeks ago, Thompson and
Roughly two weeks ago, Thompson made a final offer to the Warriors of a two-year, $40 million deal, less than the two-year, $23-to-$24 million per-year offer that was offered before the season. Per the report, the Warriors response was "We just can't do it yet."
So Thompson, the report states, was enraptured by the Mavericks' playoff run and potential fit with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving, made it known to the Warriors brass that he wanted to head to Dallas. He had Stephen Curry and Draymond Green stay out of it.
While the report says that Thompson was also intrigued by the Oklahoma City Thunder, their signing of Isaiah Hartenstein took them off the table, leaving Dallas and the Los Angeles Lakers.
Despite LeBron James offering to take a pay cut (he just signed a two-year, $104 million deal with a player option), and the Lakers willing to move heaven and earth to put a four-year, $80 million deal on the table, Thompson viewed them as having perhaps too much baggage, despite James trying to woo Thompson.
