Shocking New Details Reveal How Klay Thompson-Warriors Relationship Turned Sour
By Benedetto Vitale,
Last season wasn't the best for Klay Thompson after he and the Golden State Warriors fell short of the playoffs. Reports indicate that Thompson and the organization drew farther apart throughout the season, which is why he's now playing for the Dallas Mavericks.
In a deep dive into the situation in Golden State, Ramona Shelburne and Kendra Andrews of ESPN claim that Klay Thompson felt "miserable" throughout most of last season. Several factors at play turned the relationship between Thompson and the Warriors sour. Ranging from contract negotiations to his role on the team and his diminishing play.
"But over the past year, Thompson has been relatively easy to read. He was 'miserable,' as one person close to him said. Miserable with how negotiations with the team had gone on a new contract. Miserable at the thought he wasn't respected or valued by the franchise in the way his older Splash Brother, Stephen Curry , 36, and Draymond Green , 34, were. Miserable at his declining role on the team. And yes, miserable at the way his game and play had declined, as well."
From the sounds of it, Thompson was simply ready to move on and potentially felt stuck in Golden State last season. Nothing seemed to go his way and it was rather noticeable in his play. The veteran guard averaged just 17.9 points (third lowest average in his career), 3.3 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game.
Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson (11) sits on the bench during action against the Sacramento Kings in the fourth quarter during a play-in game of the 2024 NBA playoffs at the Golden 1 Center.
With that said, Thompson finds himself with a fresh start with a new team. The Dallas Mavericks were at the top of his list during free agency and he was able to sign a deal to match him up with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. It's an opportunity for Thompson to potentially thrive, as the consistent scoring from Doncic and Irving should allow Thompson to play more to his strengths.
When it comes down to it, a change of scenery might just be what Thompson needs at this point in his career. We've seen players switch teams before and improve their play. That's especially true if that player leaves a toxic environment. It's not clear whether or not it was toxic in Golden State. But at the very least, Klay Thompson was possibly no longer happy playing for the Warriors.
The Mavericks aim to make a repeat run to the NBA Finals next season but with different results. Meanwhile, Golden State is now focusing on rebuilding a roster to complement Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.
